What's so bad about a party?

Seeing as how I live on campus, student-related issues are something I have my mind on every now and then.


If you're like me in that way, you may have already heard about the BS that's going down in San Diego at University of California - San Diego.


If not, here's something to help get you up to speed. Basically, another of many college parties based around the idea of stereotyping people of color, this time mainly black folks, of course because that's the way to celebrate Black History Month!


So, remember black UCSD students, you're all just figments of the collective white imagination!


The parties are bad, for sure, but it's the response the local student media had that shows how far the culture of white supremacy pervades the local campus, like many campuses, my own included (Madison, Wisconsin -- Wisconsin, hello!). (Caution: The N-word is included) This is from a post at the Fly Guys.

From what information we have obtained, UCSD has a student run television show which is UC regent sponsored, and recently on it (after the Compton Cookout) one of the people involved spoke out on the black students at the school in what could easily be taken as disrespectful. Something was said along the lines of how the UCSD students were ungrateful n*ggers (emphasis and editing mine) for causing such an uproar around campus.

This makes me wonder: how do places of higher learning never learn? How is it not only possible but so predictable? And how can people of color be included in places of higher education in a real way, not just as tokens that can be cast aside, ignored and kicked around for the fun of white amusement?

This riles me up a bit, but it really just makes me sad. It's a party, it's not the same as the criminal justice system, the defense industry, the financial sector, Big Pharma, etc., but these sorts of racist incidents show that the higher education complex, the so-called "way out" (called that often by white conservatives and liberals alike) is not inclusive to people of color, esp. poor and working class people of color. That this issue continues help explain to me why people would not be wanting to go to school at places like UCSD where the black students are 2% of the total population.

P.S. -- I'm currently listening to a stream from UC-San Diego where the students and faculty are doing the seemingly-arbitrary forum over a week later. A Compton HS teacher is there and she delivered the goods for sure. Other than that, a lot of bull-pucky. Yawnicus Rex.
